Padmaraj Dandavati, senior journalist and writer, had been to the Department of Electronic Media in Bangalore University, as the guest speaker, on 11th of April.

Shir. Padmaraj Dandavati spoke about the contemporary challenges faced by the media. He pointed out a few settings, scenarios and structures that cause the crisis in today’s media. According to him, due to economic liberalization in 1991, the Indian media became a huge market and was taken over by advertisements. And the advertisement driven media has no space for rural and marginalized issues and speaks mostly for the urban lot with the purchasing power, he added.

He also said that the media, especially, electronic media, is trying to sell superstition, crime and sexuality to the public and this is sold repeatedly, as these channels need to function 24*7. Further, Shir. Padmaraj Dandavati, said that he feels that the print media is still, comparatively better than any of the television channels.

Shir. Padmaraj Dandavati ended the session by suggesting the students to be more responsible and also called them the future of journalism.
